Exfoliation is the removal of the dead skin cells that cling to the skin’s outermost surface.
Exfoliation is of two types:
· During mechanical exfoliation, dead skin cells are physically rubbed off with abrasive substances such as walnuts, almonds, sea salt and fruit pits.
· Chemical exfoliation, usually done in salons, includes chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Enzymes, alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) or betahydroxy acids (BHAS) slough away the skin’s top layer, revealing newer skin beneath.
